about
A sequel to the iconic song by Robert Earl Keen
lyrics
The road goes on forever and the story never ends
Sherry owns the poolhall where the drunks once copped a feel;
Sonny's up in Huntsville waitin' on his last appeal.
She'll ride up up to see him maybe once or twice a year,
but the guilt is overwhelming and she always leaves in tears.
She wished she could start over, and try it all again;
The road goes on forever and the sorrow never ends.
For awhile she had the money and was ridin' pretty high;
it was a blur of drugs and parties, fancy cars and endless nights.
She married a musician and they moved up to L.A. - six months
in he had an overdose; left her headed the same way; But she
finally kicked the habit, never touched the stuff again;
The road goes on forever, the addiction never ends.
For the next few years she moved around a lot from place to place; But where ever she'd end up she'd be reminded of his face.
Sonny showed up in the shadows, and he showed up in the sky; she couldn't bear leavin' the only man she ever loved to die.
She knew it's what he wanted, but she only wanted him;
The road goes on forever but the walls are closin' in.
At night she dreamed of Sonny and his strong and lovin' arms; when she was with him she felt nothing in the world could cause her harm.
She played that night on repeat over 'n over in her brain;
But no matter how she thought on it, it ended up the same:
Watchin' as his taillights disappeared around the bend;
The road goes on forever and the heartache never ends.
Sherry bought the bar a few years back to ease her troubled mind;
Sonny wrote and told her he was glad she's doin' fine.
She tried to keep her chin up, focus on her day to day;
but the was clock was tickin' down till they took Sonny's life away.
He sent his love but told her she should find another man; Sonny
sacrificed forever so that she could live again.
Sherry fills her tub up to the top and settles in;
a note taped to the mirror says "I loved you till the end".
She opens a prescription - lets her warm body relax;
smiles up at Sonny and in her mind he smiles back;
swallows the whole bottle;
wash it down with Bombay gin;
True love knows no reason, but the pain has got to end.
Afternoon in Huntsville, Sonny's execution day;
he's eaten his fried chicken, sent the chaplain on his way.
They're prepping up the chamber and the witnesses arrive, when a
call comes in about a signed confession, suicide.
He just stood there cryin' when they set him free again;
Life don't last forever, but true love never ends.
On main street after midnight, just like it was before;
many long years later at the local grocery store.
Sonny buys a paper, just like Sherry did back when;
the headline reads that Sherry's bar is changin' hands again.
He pulls out onto mainstreet in her old Mercedes Benz;
The road goes on forever and the story never ends...
